Happy New Year!

Andrew has had a good couple of days.  Yesterday he had his stomach tube taken out.  It was a painful process my Mom said and he has complained that his stomach has hurt, probably through a lot of asking and him nodding.  He had a great day with his therapies.  He even told Alana, his speech therapist, that he wanted to do 20 reps of sitting up and standing up when asked.  He said 20 on his own with just her asking.  Mom said she could tell a difference when she put him back in his bed that it was easier for him to get up from his wheelchair.

Today Andrew got sick in the middle of his dinner.  We are still not sure what is causing him to get sick.  He does so well and then all of the sudden he gets sick again.

He was more tired during his therapies today and more uncomfortable.  My parents found out today that he has a UTI.  They found that out from analyzing the blood in his urine.  So now he is on an antibiotic for that.

My parents said that they talked to his social worker today and next week they will be taking Andrew to see my parents apartment.  The social worker will be looking to see if she has any suggestions in making the apartment more accommodating for Andrew.

Today my Mom found out that a patient that was at Cedars, Madeline, is now at Rancho in the same unit with Andrew.  She was in ICU with Andrew and moved to the Critical Unit with Andrew and now here she is again with him at Rancho.  My Mom gave her one of the extra lambs sent by Good Shepherd United Methodist Church to her and her family.  When my Mom was walking down the hall, she saw the lamb and thought it looked familiar.  She found out it was Madeline, who she had given the lamb to.  Kind of interesting.

Tonight my Dad asked if I wanted to talk to Andrew on the phone.  I said sure.  When I said “Hi Andrew!”  He said “Hey Liz.”  I was shocked…along with my parents.  As I said, his verbal communication comes and goes.  He didn’t say much after that.  During the day Alana, his physical therapist, asked where he went to college and he replied, “Ball State.”  There is no telling with him when and what he is going to say.

Overall, things are looking up again.  Thanks again for all of your prayers and support!  Hopefully 2010 will be a better year for Andrew!
